Labor shuts down course linked to student visa misuse

The Albanese Government has formally intervened to suspend new enrolments in a specific graduate diploma program, following high-level concerns that the qualification was being systematically exploited by non-genuine international students to prolong their residency in Australia. This decisive move by Federal Labor marks a significant escalation in the Commonwealth’s broader strategy to restore integrity to the nation’s multi-billion dollar international education sector.

Regulatory bodies identified a troubling pattern of ‘course hopping,’ where individuals would transfer from higher-level academic degrees into shorter, less rigorous vocational or graduate diplomas. These manoeuvres are often viewed by the Department of Home Affairs as a tactic to maintain work rights and extend stays rather than for legitimate academic advancement, prompting this latest freeze on enrolments.

Education Minister Jason Clare has previously signalled that the government would not hesitate to use its powers to protect the reputation of Australian tertiary institutions.
