Air quality monitoring to be upgraded in the NT after Inpex under-reporting

The Northern Territory Government is set to overhaul its air quality surveillance network following a critical review that exposed significant under-reporting of toxic emissions by gas major Inpex. The new framework aims to bolster public transparency by monitoring a wider range of pollutants, including potential carcinogens, across the Darwin region to ensure the health of all Territorians.

This policy shift comes as a direct response to discrepancies found in the Ichthys LNG project’s environmental reporting. Independent audits revealed that previous data failed to capture the full scope of hazardous discharges, prompting serious concerns regarding the long-term impact on local air quality and the rigour of existing regulatory oversight mechanisms.

Under the proposed upgrades, sophisticated monitoring stations will be deployed to provide real-time data to the public. The NT Environment Department has signalled that stricter compliance measures will accompany these technical improvements, ensuring that industrial operators are held to the highest international standards for atmospheric safety and corporate accountability.
